Starz has struck another deal for British television, this time joining Channel 4’s Maya, led by Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us) and Tobias Menzies (Outlander), as a co-production partner.

The series comes from Daisy Haggard, who both created the show and appears in it. The story centers on a mother and daughter who are forced into witness protection to escape a serious threat. Ramsey plays teenage Maya, while Haggard plays her mother, Anna. After leaving London behind, the pair adopt new identities and settle in a small rural town, but the trauma of their past keeps resurfacing, and two hitmen hunting for them add to the tension.

Production on the six-episode series wrapped in Scotland in December, and Starz — which will bring the show to U.S. and Canadian audiences — reportedly came aboard earlier this year.

Fleabag producer Two Brothers is behind the series, with All3Media International handling the deal with Starz. Haggard, previously seen in Showtime’s Episodes and FX’s Breeders, wrote and co-directed Maya, executive producing alongside Harry and Jack Williams, Sarah Hammond, Alex Mercer, and Daisy Mount.

The acquisition continues Starz’s recent run of British programming, following its deals for the BBC’s Rebecca Hall series The Listeners, Sky’s Amadeus, and Channel 4’s Alan Cumming drama Tip Toe. Kathryn Busby, the network’s President of Original Programming, framed the show as a strong fit for Starz’s female-led slate, pointing to the pairing of Haggard and Ramsey as a key draw.
