Jay-Z is heading to HBO for a new eight-episode documentary series helmed by producer Rick Rubin, titled Jay-Z in 8. Across the episodes, Rubin will sit down with the rapper for extended conversations covering his music, songwriting, life story, and creative approach, with the show set to debut this fall on HBO Max.

The project marks a reunion of sorts — Rubin previously produced Jay-Z’s 2003 hit “99 Problems” from The Black Album. The series comes from Tetragrammaton, with Jay-Z (Shawn Carter), Rubin, and actor Daniel Kaluuya serving as executive producers, and Leila Mattimore and David Rohde producing. The Hollywood Reporter

The announcement lands during a milestone stretch for Jay-Z, who’s been marking the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint with concerts and events worldwide, including multi-night shows at Yankee Stadium and additional dates planned in Paris and Los Angeles later this year. He also returned to live performing earlier this year with a headlining set at the Roots Picnic.

A teaser released alongside the announcement shows Jay-Z reflecting candidly with Rubin on the hardship behind his creative output — with Rubin noting that struggle shaped the work.
